Fourth-generation jade carver from Suzhou, Lin Wei learned the craft from his grandmother, who learned from hers. His workshop is in the old town of Suzhou, in a courtyard that has been in his family for six generations.

Lin Wei works only four hours a day, in the morning, when the light is soft and his hands are steady. He refuses to work under artificial light — "Jade deserves the sun," he says. Each piece takes three weeks from raw stone to finished ornament, and he produces no more than twelve pieces a year.
